I was always wondering about the best time to visit Tromsø and whether winter was really the right choice.
On one hand, you have the whales migrating through the fjords, and on the other hand, you have the northern lights, which only appear during specific months of the year.
During summer, northern Norway experiences the famous Midnight Sun, meaning there is simply too much daylight for the aurora to be visible. Then there are also the snowy mountains, dramatic landscapes, hiking opportunities, and seasonal activities.
The best time to visit Tromsø depends entirely on whether you want to see the northern lights, go whale watching, experience the Midnight Sun, or simply enjoy the Arctic landscapes.
It all depends on what you want to experience.
I visited Tromsø in January, but while planning my trip I spent a lot of time researching the different seasons and what each of them has to offer.
Let’s go through it season by season.
Winter (December – February)
Winter is considered by many travellers to be the best time to visit Tromsø for northern lights and whale watching.
It is also your last chance to catch the whales before they leave the area. We visited in the middle of January and were incredibly lucky. Many people were saying it was already the end of the whale season, but we still managed to see a whole pod of orcas during our whale-watching tour.
You can read more about the activities we did in Tromsø here.
Of course, you can’t have everything in life.
If you get northern lights and whales, you also get darkness and cold.
Really, really cold.
The Polar Night is actually a spectacular phenomenon and something worth experiencing at least once.
At least that’s what I kept telling myself while I was freezing outside.
The temperatures can be brutal. During our trip it felt close to -25°C at times.
But you know what?
It was worth it.
Every single minute of it, even when we couldn’t feel our hands.
Spring (March – May)
Spring is a beautiful season in Tromsø.
There is still snow in many places, so locals are enjoying the last part of the ski season, while the days become longer and brighter.
March can still offer a chance to see the northern lights, especially early in the month, but whale watching is no longer at its peak.
By May, Tromsø feels completely different.
The city comes alive, temperatures become much more comfortable, and there is a fantastic atmosphere everywhere.
If you visit around May 17th, you can also experience Norway’s Constitution Day, when the entire country celebrates and everyone seems to be in an exceptionally good mood.
Summer (June – August)
Summer brings a completely different side of Tromsø.
The sun brings life to this small northern town, and the landscapes become green and vibrant.
If you’re wondering when to visit Tromsø for the Midnight Sun, summer is undoubtedly the answer. The highlight of summer is without a doubt the Midnight Sun.
It is one of the strangest and most fascinating experiences I have ever had.
You can literally go hiking at midnight and it feels like it’s 4 PM.
It completely messes with your sense of time, but it is absolutely worth experiencing at least once in your life.
The downside? No northern lights.
Instead, you get beautiful hikes, stunning landscapes, outdoor activities, and endless daylight.
Autumn (September – November)
Autumn might actually be the most underrated season in Tromsø.
The colours are incredible. Shades of green, yellow, orange, and red blend together across the mountains and valleys.
The days become shorter and the nights become longer, which means the northern lights start returning.
At the same time, temperatures are still much milder than in the middle of winter.
November is often considered one of the best months for northern lights. Autumn marks the beginning of the whale season, with sightings becoming more common as winter approaches
So, What Is The Best Time To Visit Tromsø?
We chose January because it worked best with our work schedules, and honestly, I don’t regret it at all.
I got to see everything I was dreaming about: northern lights, whales, snow-covered landscapes, and the magic of Arctic winter.
But for me, the best time to visit Tromsø would probably be late October or November.
You still have excellent chances of seeing the aurora, whale season is starting, and the temperatures are much more comfortable.
That means lighter clothing and a more enjoyable time outdoors.
No matter when you decide to visit, bring good friends and a good mood.
In Norway, you can’t predict the weather.
But you can predict that you’re probably going to have a great time anyway.
